Ribbon Cutting or Grand Opening Tips

Bloomington, IN Chamber. Are You In?Hosting a ribbon cutting or grand opening is an effective way to announce that you are open for business.

Here are some tips to help your ribbon cutting become a success:

  • Timing is important. The date, time and contacting the people whom you would like to attend well in advance are the first steps. The Chamber requires a 2 week notice so that ambassadors and the Chamber representative can attend. Local dignitaries may require an earlier notification so plan on asking 2-4 weeks in advance.

  • Publicize. Write a press release and submit it to the local paper, press, radio stations and Chamber to post at least 2 weeks before the event.

  • Use community calendars. Post your event on the Chamber’s community calendar, in their weekly e-newsletter and local tv/radio stations. Community calendars are usually free. Register your event on as many website resources as possible.

  • Ask people to attend. Sounds simple and it is. Invite family, friends, former colleagues, current customers, nearby businesses and Chamber members. Create a flier so that they can share the news.

  • Make the event an event. Your ribbon cutting may be the first time people enter your business so make it fun and festive. Door prizes, giveaways, discounts on products or services can add incentive for attendees to become customers. Having refreshments and a DJ if possible will liven up the atmosphere.

  • Relax and enjoy. You are the best advocate for your business so take time to enjoy the hard work that got you to the point of having a ribbon cutting. Congratulations!
