MCUM provides high-quality, affordable early learning and promotes economic mobility for families.

About us

Welcome to Monroe County United Ministries, affectionately known as MCUM. We are a nonprofit agency in Monroe County, IN with the mission to provide high-quality, affordable early learning and promote economic mobility for families. For over 80 years, we have diligently worked to meet the needs of all members of our community. We work primarily with people in or at risk of falling into poverty. When we talk about poverty we are talking about chronic scarcity and the associated stress that comes with it. Poverty is a very personal and individualized experience, but the most common problems that contribute to poverty in Monroe County include: • Low wages • Availability of jobs with adequate pay • Unaffordable healthcare • High cost of living • Generational poverty The mental bandwidth that living in poverty requires creates a cognitive tax – this can lead to impulsive decision making/poor decisions, poor memory as the brain is in a constant fight or flight mode, lack of ability to plan – when bandwidth is low and we are thinking about paying for food and rent, it is almost impossible to think about the future. MCUM is here to help people navigate that – meeting them wherever they are with support for whatever they need – with the goal of empowering them to improve their circumstances and ultimately reach self-sufficiency. Our emphasis is on generational poverty – which is why we have multi-gen, wrap-around programming between our own licensed, high-quality early learning center in addition to our community Self-Sufficiency Center.

  • Help us wish our Service Corps Fellow, Laura Hinkle, the biggest congratulations on earning her MPA. We have had the pleasure of working with Laura for the past two years, during which she successfully received funding for a start up program (Opportunity Fund) and played a pivotal role as a member of our development team. All of us are confident that Laura is going places and we cannot WAIT to see how she changes the world! Best wishes to you Laura Hinkle!!!!

Meet Laura Hinkle, MPA’24, a shining example of the transformative experiences our students gain through internships. Hinkle on interning with the Bipartisan Policy Center: “My internship at BPC was invaluable because it gave me the opportunity to connect with policy experts across a number of different policy areas. These conversations--specifically ones with analysts from the economic policy project, housing team, and immigration team--not only deepened my understanding of public policy, but also helped me realize how to leverage my MPA in pursuit of a career at a think tank. Daily collaboration with my policy team also strengthened my communication and problem-solving skills, as I learned how to adapt to my team's needs and provide support wherever necessary.” Ready to elevate your career? • Here is a throw-back to our ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Sea Turtle Room at our Compass Early Learning Center hosted by the The Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce MCUM opened it's sixth classroom on January 2nd at our Compass Early Learning Center to serve ten additional families in Monroe County. Our Level 4 NAEYC accredited early learning center now cares for 94 children, prioritizing low-income working families from our community. The Sea Turtle classroom has been in the making since 2020 and officially opened January 2nd, 2024. The classroom was originally our cafeteria, due to COVID restrictions all children were required to eat in their classroom instead of communally which opened up a beautiful space. This room wouldn't be possible without the grant funding from Early Learning Indiana and the hard work from our Compass teachers and directors in getting this classroom opened.
